Middle to upper back pain can have a variety of causes. Some potential causes of middle to upper back pain include:

  • Muscle strain: This can occur due to overuse, improper lifting, or poor posture. Symptoms may include muscle spasms, tenderness, and difficulty moving the back.

  • Disc herniation: This occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the outer layer. This can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in the back and extremities.

  • Osteoarthritis: This is a degenerative joint disease that can cause pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving the back.

  • Scoliosis: This is a condition in which the spine curves to the side, causing the back to appear uneven. It can cause back pain, as well as difficulties standing up straight or breathing.

  • Spinal stenosis: This is a condition in which the spinal canal becomes narrowed, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. It can cause back pain, as well as numbness, tingling, and weakness in the extremities.
